Shipwrecks of Norfolk Island 1982 Issue

Diocet. The vessel was at anchor in Cascade Bay on the 20th April 1873 when her anchor cable parted, allowing her to drift onto the rocks and become a total wreck. There were eight cattle aboard at the time as this was not uncommon for vessels visiting Norfolk.

`Friendship`. A strong gale from the south whipped up heavy seas on the 17th May 1835 and drove the Friend from the Government buoy at Kingston and on to the reef at the entrance to the boat harbour. The account goes that the crew and passengers were saved by some of the prisoners who hurried through the surf and carried boats bodily over the rocks and breakers, the combined efforts of all saved the the 43 passengers and crew from the watery grave.

The auxiliary ketch Warrigal sailed from Norfolk Island on the17th March 1918 heading for New Zealand with the barometer rapidly dropping and other signs indicating a approaching storm. The ship and her seven crew were never see again. On the 29th of March pieces of wreckage from the vessel and the lifeboat were washed up on the shore of Norfolk Island.
