Whales of Norfolk Island

The Sperm Whale (Physeter catodon)  is the largest of the toothed whales it has an enormous head which comprises one- third of its entire length. It has a blow hole on the lefthandside of the tip of its snout. It is dark grey, lightening as it ages. They commonly travel in groups of fifteen or twenty. Its maximum lenght is 65 feet and weight is 60 tons.

The Southern Right whale (Eubalaena Australis) has a "horny" bonnet, known as a callasity on its snout. Its colouring is black and it has a V shaped snout, owning to its having two blow- holes. The maximun lenght is 60 feet and weight is 50 tons.

The Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is black on the top with large patches of white on the underside. It has broad throat groves, a black baleen and large flippers 12-13 feet long. the most active of all the great whales and is capable of somesaulting in mid-air, its full lenght which is at it maximun lenght of 50 feet. Weight 45 tons and could carry up to 1/2 ton of barnicales on its body.
