A Grim Reminder of the Past-in the Cemetery at Kingston
A gaol and other administrative buildings were built, and many remain to this day
as tourist attractions. The graveyard at Kingston contains many reminders of the grim days
of the Penal Colony, on January 15th 1834, a large scale mutiny took place and 55 convicts
were tried, 15 of these were ordered for execution by Sir William Burton, the presiding
judge of the special Supreme Court. On September 22nd and 23nd of that year the remaining
2000 odd convicts witnessed the executions of the 15 men.
