

This issue, the first commemorative series to be issued by Norfolk Island was of particular historical interest as it marked the centenary of the the arrival of the free settlers from Pitcarin Island. Two stamps were issued, both showing a representation of the Great Seal of Norfolk Island, on loan from the Mitchell Library in Sydney.

Postal rate changes in late 1956 necessitated a requirement for the 7d & 8d stamps, so a provisional issue was provided by overprinting the 7½d and 8½d stamps of 1953.
Commemorative Issue-150 Anniversary of Post Office
in Australia

Australia issued this 4d denomination in April 1959 to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Post Office. The island issue was overprinted in red with Norfolk Island and 5d due to increase in postal rates.
